Sonny Burges with the Blasters

The following two videos show Sonny Burgess performing two of his signature songs with the Blasters. They're great, good sound and good quality.

Sonny Burgess performs "Sadie's Back in Town", a song he recorded with the Pacers in the late 1950s for Sun. The wild energy of this version is awesome, IMO just as good as the original version!

"Red Headed Woman" was the flip to Burgess' first single "We Wanna Boogie" in 1956 for Sun. Hear Sonny's abilities on the guitar, they're still fantastic.

Charlie Daniels suffered stroke

On Friday, January 15, country rock legend Charlie Daniels (famous for "The Devil Went Down to Georgia") suffered a light stroke, while he was in Colorado. He was first carried to the Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango, Colorado, and then to the Swedish Medical Center in Denver. Last Sunday, he returned to his home.

Despite the stroke, Daniels' manager said that the new tour, beginning next Febuary in Florida, will not be canceled. According to the manager, Daniel is feeling fine and in good form.

Something about Keith Courvale

Keith came to my mind again, when Red sent out both sides of his Dot 45. Thanks to Red that I now have both sides of this, because "Steelworker Blues" hasn't been reissued yet.Keith Courvale first appeared in 1958, when his single "Trapped Love / Steelworker Blues" appeared on the obscure Val label. Info on this label is very rare, Courvale's single was pressed by the RCA custom service. Anyway, the record might sold well, for Dot Records picked it up and released it again in October 1958. Although the single had much more distribution and better promotion, it didn't reach the charts and Courvale disappeared from the music scene.

Ric Cartey tribute

As someone recently suggested, I uploaded some of Ric Cartey's RCA Victor songs, because he died last year's August. Cartey was born in 1937 and started off as a rockabilly singer for Stars Records, a local Atlanta label owned by Bill Lowery. His single "Ooh-Wee / Young Love" was picked up by RCA Victor, after several recording stars hit the charts with Cartey's "Young Love". During 1956-1957, he recorded more material for RCA, inlcuding Don Johnston's great "Born to Love One Woman" and "Heart Throb", which was originally recorded and written by Tommy Spurlin. Spurlin was a local Miami rockabilly artist and Bill Lowery picked up the song, pitched it to his writer Jerry Reed, who changed the lyrics a little bit and had Cartey record the song. After success eluded him, Cartey went back to Georgia and recorded for Lowery's NRC label, waxing the classic "Scratchin' On My Screen". After that, he recorded for ABC-Paramount and El-Rico.

Except one unissed RCA Victor track and "Young Love", I uploaded Cartey's complete recorded RCA material.

Carl Smith RIP

Country music star Carl Smith died on Saturday, January 16. He was 82 years old.

Smith started his career back in the late 1940s and got a recording contract with Columbia in 1950. During the 1950s, he was one of the most succesful country music artists with such hits as "Hey Joe", "Let Old Mother Nature Have Her Way", "Loose Talk", "Back Up Buddy" among others. His first wife was June Carter, with whom he had a daughter, Carlene Carter, and later married singer Goldie Hill (who died in 2005). Smith was a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.

One more legend is gone...

Anni & Gerda / The Benicarlos on Decca

A rare Decca 45 released in Germany, probably in the 1950s. There are plenty of Anni & Gerda records for sale on the web, but I cound't find anything about them on web. The flip was a song by the Benicarlos called "Blauer Himmel, weiße Wolken" ("Blue Sky, White Clouds"), which also appeared in the 1958 film "Die Landärztin". The group was primary a studio vocal act that backed other artists and recorded also solo. They consisted of the Corner Trio (which were present on every session) and Rolf Simson, who sang with them once in a while. Also some other studio singers were at one time or another part of the Benicarlos. They recorded for Decca and Telefunken (affliated with Decca). I found a discography of their songs here.
